February

Wow! February has arrived! We will be celebrating I Love to Read Month and Catholic School’s week this month with lots of fun activities and events!

In Language Arts we have been continuing with our spelling and phonics programs as well as doing a lot of writing.  We have also been learning about the different types of sentences.  Such as, questions, statements, commands and sentences that shows emotion.  The students are learning what type of punctuation needs to go at the end of each.

In Math, we have been focusing on some mental math strategies.  We are learning how to add by place value and how to make 10’s or doubles to add numbers in our heads quickly.  We are also practicing using number lines and hundred charts to help us add by always starting with the bigger number first.

We have started a new Science unit on the different states of matter.  We are learning about liquids, gases and solids and how they can change from one state to another.  For example, ice is a solid but when it is heated it changes to a liquid.

In Social Studies, we have begun learning about Canada’s smallest province Prince Edward Island.  We will compare the similarities and differences between P.E.I. and Manitoba.

Please remember to check your child’s agenda and sign it every day.  This is such an important piece of communication between home and school.  Thank you to all the parents who already do this and thank you to all the parents who are reading with their child each night.  It doesn’t take much, even just 10 minutes a day will make a big difference in their reading development.

Take care,

Mrs. Shade
